The Gospel of Thomas fully interpreted

The best kept secrets revealed

Saying 81: Jesus said, "Let him who has grown rich be king, and let him who possesses power renounce it".

Meaning: ‘Let him who has grown rich be king’, a king is a ruler over the world. Their reward will only last as long as their time in the world. A king is ruled over by worldly desires. To believe you have power over another is a delusion, it only lasts as long as the time that the other soul or the self, has not found itself. Those who have power over others do not have power over themselves. A soul that has found itself rules only over itself.

Saying 82: Jesus said, "He who is near me is near the fire, and he who is far from me is far from the kingdom."

Meaning: The fire can be seen as the Truth, it is the word of God. Those who were near Jesus were near the Truth. Those who were far away were far from knowing themselves.

Saying 83: Jesus said, "The images are manifest to man, but the light in them remains concealed in the image of the light of the father. He will become manifest, but his image will remain concealed by his light."

Meaning: That which is in the awareness of the soul, is evident to the soul, but the light in those things, which is the life of God remains hidden within that which is aware (the self).

God will become evident, but will remain hidden from the self. We are a part of God, and we can never observe that part, which is ourselves, we can only ever feel the awareness of the self.

Saying 84: Jesus said, "When you see your likeness, you rejoice. But when you see your images which came into being before you, and which neither die not become manifest, how much you will have to bear!"

Meaning: When you come to know yourself (become self aware), you rejoice. But when you see your soul as it was created (without sin), and then see what it has done, how much will you repent?

Saying 85: Jesus said, "Adam came into being from a great power and a great wealth, but he did not become worthy of you. For had he been worthy, he would not have experienced death."

Meaning: ‘Adam cam into being’ from God. You are greater than Adam, for he never came to know himself, and he experienced death.

Saying 86: Jesus said, "The foxes have their holes and the birds have their nests, but the son of man has no place to lay his head and rest."

Meaning: Jesus always found a place to rest his body, but could find no place to rest his mind from the task that he had to accomplish. There was nowhere to lay down his burden.

Saying 87: Jesus said, "Wretched is the body that is dependant upon a body, and wretched is the soul that is dependent on these two."

Meaning: What are you, a SOUL, a BODY or a SOUL and a BODY? If you are a soul, then you do not depend on the body. If you are a body, then you depend on the body. If you are a soul and a body, you depend on both, for you depend on the place where you think your life is.

Saying 88: Jesus said, "The angels and the prophets will come to you and give to you those things you (already) have. And you too, give them those things which you have, and say to yourselves, 'When will they come and take what is theirs?'"

Meaning: The things that were to be given and received, were the thing of Love.

Saying 89: Jesus said, "Why do you wash the outside of the cup? Do you not realize that he who made the inside is the same one who made the outside?"

Meaning: The cup represents the body. The inside of the cup represents the soul. Both were made by God. Why cleanse your body and not cleanse your soul.

Saying 90: Jesus said, "Come unto me, for my yoke is easy and my lordship is mild, and you will find repose for yourselves."

Meaning: Take the knowledge I carry and learn from me, for the knowledge is easy to bear, and as your teacher, I am gentle. Here you will find rest for your soul.
