The Gospel of Thomas fully interpreted

The best kept secrets revealed

Saying 51: His disciples said to him, "When will the repose of the dead come about and when will the new world come?" He said to them, "What you look forward to has already come, but you do not recognize it”.

Meaning: Those who are dead in spirit do not rest, but that rest is here for them now, they will be awakened from their sleep and forgetfulness and they shall rise from death into life.

Saying 52: His disciples said to him, "Twenty-four prophets spoke in Israel, and all of them spoke in you”. He said to them, "You have omitted the one living in your presence and have spoken (only) of the dead."

Meaning: Here Jesus clearly makes it plain that he is a prophet.

Saying 53: His disciples said to him, "Is circumcision beneficial or not?" He said to them, "If it were beneficial, their father would beget them already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become completely profitable."

Meaning: Circumcision has no benefit. It was the mark of one who kept God’s laws. Taking away that which is not needed by the soul is more beneficial and they are worldly desires.

Saying 54: Jesus said, "Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of heaven”.

Meaning: The poor are those who have very little of the world because they were not drawn into it, rather they were drawn into themselves and into the kingdom within.

Saying 55: Jesus said, "Whoever does not hate his father and his mother cannot become a disciple to me. And whoever does not hate his brothers and sisters and take up his cross in my way will not be worthy of me."

Meaning: The hate referred to was for the physical part of a person. The cross referred to was the task that Jesus had come to accomplish. It was showing others the way by demonstration. It was a burden to carry and would cause suffering and to be condemned for the sake of the Truth that would set them free. He was saying that to be worthy of him, they had to do as he was doing.

Saying 56: Jesus said, "Whoever has come to understand the world has found (only) a corpse, and whoever has found a corpse is superior to the world”.

Meaning: Whoever comes to understand the world, will realise it has no life and is worthless to the soul. Having realised this, they will be superior to the world.

Saying 57: Jesus said, "The kingdom of the father is like a man who had good seed. His enemy came by night and sowed weeds among the good seed. The man did not allow them to pull up the weeds; he said to them, 'I am afraid that you will go intending to pull up the weeds and pull up the wheat along with them.' For on the day of the harvest the weeds will be plainly visible, and they will be pulled up and burned."

Meaning: A soul may come into the world with goodness that is Truth, but the world and those of it may add that which is not good and right to that soul’s beliefs. That soul will then become confused as to what is right and what is wrong and so not knowing which is right or wrong, a soul will hang onto all of its beliefs, regardless of what others say. On the day that that soul comes to know itself, it will see that which is not of Truth and goodness, and it will cast out those things.

Saying 58: Jesus said "Blessed is the man who has suffered and found life”.

Meaning: Blessed are those who have suffered for that which is good and right and have found themselves, for they have been true to themselves. They have found the kingdom within.

Saying 59: Jesus said, "Take heed of the living one while you are alive, lest you die and seek to see him and be unable to do so”.

Meaning: Take note of your spiritual life within, lest you lose your spiritual awareness, for if you lose yourself completely, and then seek to find yourself again, you will not be able to.

Saying 60: <They saw> a Samaritan carrying a lamb on his way to Judea. He said to his disciples, "That man is round about the lamb." They said to him, "So that he may kill it and eat it”. He said to them, "While it is alive, he will not eat it, but only when he has killed it and it has become a corpse”.
They said to him, "He cannot do so otherwise."
He said to them, "You too, look for a place for yourself within repose, lest you become a corpse and be eaten."

Meaning: The Samaritan can be compared to the physical body. The lamb is seen as the good soul, surrounded by the body. The body cannot rule over the soul until it has taken its life by overcoming its belief in the spiritual. Jesus told his disciples to look for a place of rest within, from the desires of the body.
