The Gospel of Thomas fully interpreted

The best kept secrets revealed

Saying 41: Jesus said, "Whoever has something in his hand will receive more, and whoever has nothing will be deprived of even the little he has”.

Meaning: ‘Something in his hand’ refers to those whose name is in the book of life, to those who are spiritually awakening. Those who have nothing will be deprived by the world of everything spiritual.

Saying 42: Jesus said, "Become passers-by."

Meaning: Ignore the temptations of the world; pass through the world, for it has nothing that you need, be not of the world.

Saying 43: His disciples said to him, "Who are you that you should say these things to us?" Jesus said to them, "You do not realize who I am from what I say to you, but you have become like the Jews, for they (either) love the tree and hate its fruit (or) love the fruit and hate the tree”.

Meaning: They either love what they teach, but hate abiding by those teachings themselves or, they love the rewards gained from what they teach, but hate the teachings.

Saying 44: Jesus said, "Whoever blasphemes against the father will be forgiven, and whoever blasphemes against the son will be forgiven, but whoever blasphemes against the holy spirit will not be forgiven either on earth or in heaven”.

Meaning: If one curses God or the son, it will be forgiven, because they are not truly known to you, but the Holy Spirit is God’s Word. It is Truth of all that is good and right. If you curse that which is good and right, it is because you have not come to know yourself, and you have not become known. You are not yet in the book of life (awake) therefore, you cannot receive forgiveness from that which you do not know; you are unable to repent.

Saying 45: Jesus said, "Grapes are not harvested from thorns, nor are figs gathered from thistles, for they do not produce fruit. A good man brings forth good from his storehouse; an evil man brings forth evil things from his evil storehouse, which is in his heart, and says evil things. For out of the abundance of the heart he brings forth evil things."

Meaning:  Jesus was telling his disciples which people they should preach to and gather. This would be the people who already had some goodness and truth in them and that they should not waste there time on those who had only evil in their hearts. Hence you cannot increase goodness if there is none to increase.

Saying 46: Jesus said, "Among those born of women, from Adam until John the Baptist, there is no one so superior to John the Baptist that his eyes should not be lowered (before him). Yet I have said, whichever one of you comes to be a child will be acquainted with the kingdom and will become superior to John."

Meaning: ‘Those born of women’, refers to physical bodies, as opposed to souls born of God. John the Baptist never came to know himself but those who do will be superior to him. Even though there were none more superior in faith and servitude to God, John was still without enlightenment.

Saying 47: Jesus said, "It is impossible for a man to mount two horses or to stretch two bows. And it is impossible for a servant to serve two masters; otherwise, he will honour the one and treat the other contemptuously. No man drinks old wine and immediately desires to drink new wine. And new wine is not put into old wineskins, lest they burst; nor is old wine put into a new wineskin, lest it spoil it. An old patch is not sewn onto a new garment, because a tear would result."

Meaning: It is impossible for anyone to follow two different and opposing teachings, those of the old Jewish religion and Jesus’ (The old wine and the new wine.) ‘Wine’ refers to teachings. The ‘old wineskins’ refer to those who followed the Old Testament. The new wineskins were those who followed Jesus. ‘The patch’ refers to the old teachings and the new teachings being incompatible. Jesus was saying that he did not come to add new teachings to the old religion, but rather to show a new way, hence the irreparable schism between the Jewish way and that of Jesus.

Saying 48: Jesus said, "If two make peace with each other in this one house, they will say to the mountain, 'Move Away,' and it will move away."

Meaning: The two that make peace are the soul and body. The house is the mind and the mountain is that which the world casts on your path, that which is of the world that you must overcome, by moving it with faith, or by standing at its summit in domination, so that the world may see your light.

Saying 49: Jesus said, "Blessed are the solitary and elect, for you will find the kingdom. For you are from it, and to it you will return."

Meaning: Those who come to know themselves, know that they are individual and without a master except for themselves. They find the spiritual kingdom where they are empowered and in peace.

Saying 50: Jesus said, "If they say to you, 'Where did you come from?’ say to them, 'we came from the light, the place where the light came into being on its own accord and established itself and became manifest through their image.' If they say to you, 'Is it you?’ say, 'We are its children, we are the elect of the living father.' If they ask you, 'What is the sign of your father in you?’ say to them, 'It is movement and repose.'"

Meaning: We came from the Source that be came conscious and was self begotten.

It became established and is known, through the souls it created. We are God's children.

The sign of our Creator in us, is in movement, which is awareness (life that never rests) and repose which is peace that is found in awareness.
