The Gospel of Thomas fully interpreted

The best kept secrets revealed

Saying 101: <Jesus said,> "Whoever does not hate his father and his mother as I do cannot become a disciple to me. And whoever does not love his father and his mother as I do cannot become a disciple to me. For my mother [...], but my true mother gave me life."

Meaning: It is that which is in a person (the soul) that should be loved, not that which is outside of the soul (physical body). The physical mother gives birth to the physical child, but God gave birth to the soul. God is referred to here as ‘mother’. There is no gender in a soul and there is no gender in God. It is only a requirement for those who need a reference for understanding.

Saying 102: Jesus said, "Woe to the Pharisees, for they are like a dog sleeping in the manger of oxen, for neither does he eat nor does he let the oxen eat."

Meaning: The Pharisees would not eat the spiritual food that God provided (the word), nor would they let anyone else. They refused to obey the word because they would have had to give up their wealth and power, and to keep that wealth and power, they hid the true meanings of God’s word.

Saying 103: Jesus said, "Fortunate is the man who knows where the brigands will enter, so that he may get up, muster his domain, and arm himself before they invade."

Meaning: Fortunate is the person who knows and is ready with, the answers to the questions asked by those who would attack his faith. The domain is the mind.

Saying 104: They said to Jesus, "Come, let us pray today and let us fast."
Jesus said, "What is the sin that I have committed, or wherein have I been defeated? But when the bridegroom leaves the bridal chamber, then let them fast and pray."

Meaning: Jesus did not need to pray or fast, because he was without sin, so needed no forgiveness, and he was not in need of God’s help, because he had not been defeated by the world or those of it.

Saying 105: Jesus said, "He who knows the father and the mother will be called the son of a harlot."

Meaning: He who knows the father and the mother (by their outward appearance alone) will be called the son of a harlot. In context: A harlot is one who has sold themselves to the world, to gain payment from the world. One may know other people as a physical being, or as a spiritual being (soul).

Saying 106: Jesus said, "When you make the two one, you will become the sons of man, and when you say, 'Mountain, move away,' it will move away."

Meaning: ‘When you make the two one’, you realise that both the spiritual and the material are God (the soul and the body). Every physical son is a son of physical man, yet even physical man is a part of God. Children of God are not counted as such, until they become perfected. That is when they come to know themselves and God and choose to do God’s will. The ‘son of man’ is the one who has not yet been tested for perfection. If it were not so, Jesus would not have asked God to take away his cup (that which he was to endure). This was before his trial. The moment he chose to do the will of God and accept what was to come, was the moment he was perfected and became a son of God. A soul does not become perfected until it completely accepts to do God’s will without regard for the self.

Saying 107: Jesus said, "The kingdom is like a shepherd who had a hundred sheep. One of them, the largest, went astray. He left the ninety-nine sheep and looked for that one until he found it. When he had gone to such trouble, he said to the sheep, 'I care for you more than the ninety-nine.'"

Meaning: The largest sheep was of course the soul that had grown the most spiritually, but had wandered from the Truth.

Saying 108: Jesus said, "He who will drink from my mouth will become like me. I myself shall become he, and the things that are hidden will be revealed to him."

Meaning: He who will listen to and understand my teachings, will become like me, we will become as one and the same (children of God) and the knowledge of the ‘all’ will be revealed to them.

Saying 109: Jesus said, "The kingdom is like a man who had a hidden treasure in his field without knowing it. And after he died, he left it to his son. The son did not know (about the treasure). He inherited the field and sold it. And the one who bought it went ploughing and found the treasure. He began to lend money at interest to whomever he wished."

Meaning: The kingdom is like a person who had hidden truth in his domain/mind that he did not know about. After that person forgot their true Self, the hidden truth was left to their new identity (natural man), which was also unaware of the truth still hidden in its domain/mind. The son which was actually a new personality, had the same domain/mind as the last personality. (Personality refers to what we think we are, i.e. a spiritual or physical being).

The son who had inherited the domain/mind began to use it in pursuit of physical pleasure (he became a slave to the world in exchange for control of his domain/mind.

The one who brought the son’s domain was the new third personality of the Self, and this new personality searched its domain and found the hidden truth, he then used that truth in an unrighteous way to profit from others.

In simple terms:

We are born with a little truth hidden in our mind, and we know our true identity as a spiritual being. If we do not find that hidden truth, which is revealed when we choose love, we cannot gain more truth and we lose both our understanding of what truth is, and also our true identity. We then come to believe that the material/physical is all that there is. We then take on a new identity and a new way of understanding. We then use the mind in pursuit of what the world has to give, in exchange for peace of mind and unity with others. Some have called it selling the soul for selfish gains. In this state a person will search their mind to find ways of gaining wealth and power, regardless of the loss or suffering to others. If they then find the truth hidden in their mind, they will use it without love as a tool for personal gain. They take advantage of those who are good hearted, they become the wolves in sheep’s clothing, who use fear, guilt and deception to control and deprive.

The kingdom within is the Self’s domain (the mind).

Saying 110: Jesus said, "Whoever finds the world and becomes rich, let him renounce the world."

Meaning: You cannot serve two masters, both God and the world.

Saying 111: Jesus said, "The heavens and the earth will be rolled up in your presence. And the one who lives from the living one will not see death." Does not Jesus say, "Whoever finds himself is superior to the world?"

Meaning: "The heavens and the earth will be rolled up in your presence’, means you will see everything as it truly is. The one who finds his true place of life, which is the soul, will not see death.

Saying 112: Jesus said, "Woe to the flesh that depends on the soul; woe to the soul that depends on the flesh".

Meaning: The body cannot live without the soul; the soul does not depend on the body for its life and woe to the soul that believes it does.

Saying 113: His disciples said to him, "When will the kingdom come?" Jesus said, "It will not come by waiting for it. It will not be a matter of saying 'here it is' or 'there it is.' Rather, the kingdom of the father is spread out upon the earth, and men do not see it."

Meaning: The ‘kingdom of the father’ is the souls spread upon the earth.

Saying 114: Simon Peter said to him, "Let Mary leave us, for women are not worthy of life." Jesus said, "I myself shall lead her in order to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males. For every woman who will make herself male will enter the kingdom of heaven."

Meaning: It was believed in those days, by those other than Jesus, that women were less worthy than men. Jesus knew that the soul had no gender therefore this was his way of appeasing his disciples. When a person is born, their soul takes on the gender of the body they inhabit. Whether that gender is male or female, makes no difference to the soul.

NB: You cannot make a female physical body into a male physical body therefore, Jesus was referring to changing the female attitude, into a male attitude.
